Barclays introduces a comprehensive framework to evaluate the defensibility of online marketplaces against artificial intelligence disruption. The report argues that broad generalizations regarding AI risk overlook critical structural distinctions between platforms. Barclays segments marketplaces into four structural categories ranging from light-touch to heavily managed, scoring them based on transaction complexity, purchase frequency, price points, and the scalability and replicability of supply and demand.
According to this heatmap analysis, heavily managed platforms such as Amazon and MercadoLibre possess the strongest AI defensibility due to their deep service integration, advanced inventory management, and robust fulfillment capabilities. Large e-commerce and mobility or delivery platforms like Uber and DoorDash also scored highly at 25 out of 28. Conversely, smaller e-commerce and travel platforms, including Booking Holdings and Expedia, scored lower due to lower purchase frequencies and non-exclusive inventory.
The report suggests that high take-rate models could face margin compression risks as AI facilitates alternative discovery methods. While AI is unlikely to completely disintermediate established platforms immediately, it may force economic concessions.
Barclays specifically highlights that ZG, despite declining 40% year-to-date, may have its defensibility underestimated by the market due to its complex transactions and strong user habits. The report advises investors to monitor companies exhibiting rapid employee growth or below-average gross profit per employee ratios, as these firms possess significant cost optimization potential should AI-driven compression pressures materialize.
