JPMorgan downgrades Chewy to Neutral from Overweight with a new December 2027 price target of $24 (from $29, December 2026), based on roughly 7x 2028E adjusted EBITDA of $1.2bn (about 8x 2028E FCF of $1bn), a discount to consumer-subscription comparables averaging ~17x. Shares fell 9% post-results (S&P 500 -1%). Q2 net sales of $3.33bn beat the bank's $3.311bn estimate and grew 7% year-on-year; adjusted EBITDA margin of 6.8% exceeded the 6.3-6.4% guidance, though nearly all upside came from ~$15M of timing and one-off gross-margin benefits (~$10M tariff refunds and rebates, ~$5M gift-card breakage and inventory adjustments). Macro headwinds persist: the consumer backdrop is no worse than late Q1 but not recovering, with discretionary attachments and premiumization still pressured. Execution remains solid — Chewy outgrew the pet category by 2-3x, added 208k net active customers (43k from SmartPak), and repurchased $200M of stock. The FY26 guidance mid-point rose ~$40M despite no assumed consumer recovery; 2027/2028 estimates move up less than 1%. AI should deliver tens of millions in FY26 savings and ~$50M annualized in FY27; the Cai assistant self-resolves ~30% of chats. Q3 gross margin should dip sequentially.
