Nomura released an update to its USD/CNY central parity rate forecasting model on May 8, 2026. The quantitative model projects the daily fixing at 6.8161, representing a decrease of 326 pips from the prior forecast of 6.8487, and a premium of 146 pips over the previous official spot close. When incorporating the countercyclical factor, the adjusted fixing projection stands at 6.8363, which is 124 pips lower than the previous official midpoint.

The overnight contributing weights within the model are primarily driven by four currencies: the euro, Korean won, Australian dollar, and Japanese yen. Nomura also tracks daily model errors without the countercyclical adjustment and monitors the daily fluctuations of the USD/CNY fixing to validate the model's effectiveness and track potential central bank interventions.

Furthermore, the report highlights a calendar of upcoming key events that could introduce volatility and influence the renminbi's trajectory. These critical milestones include a Trump-Xi summit scheduled for May 14-15, late July Politburo meetings, the National Day Golden Week in early October, the November APEC summit in Shenzhen, and the Central Economic Work Conference in mid-December. A potential year-end state visit by President Xi to the United States also remains a key variable for the exchange rate.
