Citi's weekly flash note on China battery materials (nine pages) draws on ZE Consulting's latest production-line survey. The survey indicates that September 2026 monthly output across battery and battery-materials segments — cathode, electrolyte and anode — is set for only mid-single-digit sequential growth, with lithium the exception at roughly 11% month-over-month. ZE Consulting estimates CATL's September production fell 3% month-over-month, with October output likely broadly flat. Combined with lingering concerns over battery demand, particularly for EV batteries, near-term sentiment should remain under pressure. The report tracks lithium carbonate monthly and weekly inventories (split between downstream users, smelters and others), battery-grade lithium carbonate spreads assuming one month of inventory, including a China lithium hydroxide spread line, and monthly and weekly production of industrial-grade and battery-grade lithium carbonate, using SMM data. Conditionally, if this week's inventory drawdown momentum continues, the October physical market could tighten — a scenario, not a forecast. CATL is the only company named; the note contains no ratings, target prices, or specific lithium price forecasts.
