Morgan Stanley argues that as Japan normalizes interest rates, differentiation in strategy — not the rising-rate tide alone — will determine which financials generate alpha. The bank rates Japanese banks and insurance Attractive, while brokers and other financials are rated In-Line. With the Bank of Japan having exited negative rates and further hikes expected — the policy rate is forecast at 0.75% in December 2025 — deposit-loan spreads should improve, while labor shortages and reshoring lift domestic capital expenditure and loan demand. Deposit-rate pass-through is roughly 41% overall and about 30% on ordinary deposits. Large banks hold financing advantages in 17 priority growth areas including AI infrastructure, advanced semiconductors and industrial automation, and digital banks keep gaining deposits — SBI Sumishin Net Bank held deposits of ¥1,296.4 billion as of March 2026. Morgan Stanley projects the 10-year JGB yield at 3.00% and USD/JPY at 162 in Q4 2027. Preferred Overweight names are Mizuho Financial Group, Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group and Japan Post Bank among banks; Japan Post Insurance, Sompo Holdings and Tokio Marine Holdings in insurance; and PayPay, Credit Saison, Marui Group and Mitsubishi HC Capital among brokers and others.
