Abstract
Goldman Sachs' monthly Front Row box-office tracker (September 3) shows August 2026 North American domestic box office (DBO) of $1.267 billion, up 86% year-over-year yet still 8% below 2019, despite one fewer weekend (14 vs 15 days). On the strength of the summer slate, Goldman raised its 3Q26 DBO forecast by roughly $211 million to $2.89 billion (+22% y/y, +3% vs 3Q19, 29% of the full-year total), driven by outperformance from The Odyssey (3Q estimate up to $620 million) and Spider-Man: Brand New Day ($981 million), partly offset by The End of Oak Street and Dog Stars. Full-year 2026 DBO is now seen near $10.1 billion (+17%; prior $9.76 billion) and 2027 near $10.2 billion (+1%), with balanced risks. IMAX global box office rose 8% YTD (July +55%) and domestic DBO 28%, prompting ~9%/13% upward revisions to 2026 revenue/adjusted EBITDA; the Neutral rating stands with a $50 twelve-month target (from $42). Cinemark remains Neutral ($35.19) after attendance +53% and app downloads +61%. Top 10 films took 78% of 2Q26 DBO; annual admissions and DBO have reset to roughly 67%/80% of pre-pandemic levels, with recovery to $10.2 billion by 2027 (89% of 2019) then a range-bound path, while below-pre-pandemic Los Angeles production poses a long-term supply risk.
