Goldman Sachs notes that despite weak consumer sentiment and adverse weather in 2Q26, most Chinese consumer staples companies reported month-over-month improvement in June. This recovery is driven by easier comparisons from June 2025, healthy channel inventory, and the timing of the Dragon Boat Festival. Key highlights from Goldman's Consumer Day include resilient same-store sales growth and faster-than-expected store expansion by value retailers like Wanchen.

Cost pressures are easing as PET and oil prices decline. Consequently, gross margins remained resilient in 1H26, with expansion at Master Kong, Dongpeng, Yihai, and Yankershop. However, food and beverage brands remain cautious on pricing, focusing on high-margin product innovations. Selling expenses rose modestly but stayed under control due to disciplined marketing spend.

Value retailers remain the fastest-growing channel. Master Kong achieved high-teens growth in this channel year-to-date. Shareholder returns remain robust; Yihai and Master Kong maintain roughly 100% payout ratios, while CR Beer and Mengniu commit to stable dividend growth.

Looking ahead to 3Q26, favorable bases persist, but weather and sentiment remain key swing factors. Goldman maintains positive views on value retailers like Wanchen, dairy leader Mengniu, Haitian-H, Yihai, and CR Beer. Additionally, the firm upgrades Chacha to Buy, citing easing competition and cost tailwinds.
