Morgan Stanley observes that first-quarter 2026 payment data across China reflects a healthy underlying consumption environment, characterized by a notable shift in consumer payment behavior. Specifically, certain transaction volumes have migrated back to traditional bank cards from third-party payment platforms. Bank card transaction values grew by 8% year-over-year, driven by a broader consumption recovery, whereas third-party payment growth decelerated to 5%. Total system payments surged 29% year-over-year in the first quarter, a significant acceleration from the 5% growth recorded in the fourth quarter of 2025. The report notes that UnionPay transaction growth rebounded to 11.2%, while network payment growth moderated slightly to 7.2%. Within the banking sector, net interest margin pressure has marginally alleviated, remaining flat sequentially and narrowing by just 2 basis points year-over-year. Asset quality indicators present a mixed picture; the non-pering loan ratio held steady at 1.75%, although credit card delinquencies edged higher to 2.1%. Consumer loan growth recovered to 12%, buoyed by low base effects and promotional activities. Morgan Stanley maintains a cautiously optimistic outlook for Chinese financials. The bank sector offers compelling defensive value with historically low valuations and dividend yields hovering around 6%.
