BofA Securities upgrades China Industrial Bank (601166.SH) from Underperform to Buy, raising the target price from RMB 21.10 to RMB 22.50. The upgrade rests on three pillars: anticipated sequential earnings recovery, asymmetric upside optionality from a large unconverted convertible bond of approximately RMB 41 billion, and depressed valuation at 0.44x P/B with an attractive 6.2% dividend yield.

Following a 2023 earnings trough driven by wealth management revenue base effects, NIM compression, and elevated provisions, operating conditions stabilized through 2024–25, with revenue and net profit returning to positive growth for two consecutive years. BofA expects recovery to strengthen in 2026 as net interest income improves, non-interest income recovers, and credit costs stabilize.

China Industrial Bank is the only national bank with a substantial unconverted convertible bond, maturing December 2027. The conversion price stands at RMB 20.63 versus a current share price of RMB 18.42, implying total returns of approximately 22–46% are needed to reach voluntary or mandatory conversion thresholds. Historically, bank shares tend to outperform ahead of CB conversion, supported by management incentives and shareholder actions.

EPS forecasts for 2026–28 are RMB 3.70, RMB 3.92, and RMB 4.18, representing year-over-year growth of 6.9%, 6.0%, and 6.5%. Dividends per share are projected at RMB 1.14, RMB 1.21, and RMB 1.29, yielding 6.19%, 6.56%, and 6.99% respectively. The target price is based on a 13.5% cost of equity, with 2026E ROE at 9.2%.
