Barclays recommends staying the course on equity factor positioning in the current macro environment, remaining positive on Value and Large-over-Small while neutral on Growth, Momentum, Quality and Yield, and negative on High-over-Low Volatility. Robust economic growth, persistent inflation pressure and rising funding costs are the core macro variables shaping factor performance. With the 10-year US Treasury yield above 5% - currently around 5.2% - small caps face meaningful headwinds given their funding sensitivity, underpinning the preference for large caps. Barclays rates strategists expect the 10-year yield to hold near current levels over the coming quarters. Analysts see the crowded AI theme as a potential trigger for rotation toward more cyclical, reasonably valued segments, with Value offering anti-AI characteristics and consumer resilience. Momentum has performed strongly of late, but midterm elections could disrupt market leadership; historically, Momentum sold off between end-September and end-November in four of the past five midterm years, while Quality gained in the last four. High Volatility is viewed negatively, as its cohort has the lowest share of profitable companies and is highly sensitive to deteriorating risk appetite. Barclays expects annual AI infrastructure spending to exceed $1.4 trillion by 2028.
