UBS highlights that the copper market is entering a phase of severe supply constraints, effectively accelerating an ongoing bull market. The firm projects that copper prices will continue climbing throughout 2026, driven fundamentally by a widening supply-demand gap. On the supply side, mining output is declining due to aging assets while new projects face lengthy development timelines and repeated delays. This scarcity cannot be resolved quickly, firmly underpinning prices.

Simultaneously, structural demand growth continues unabated. The global push toward electrification and the renewable energy transition requires vast quantities of copper, sustaining long-term consumption. While Chinese demand remains stable, other global regions are experiencing accelerated demand growth.

Key commodity pricing data illustrates copper prices rebounding from 2024 lows and tracking a steep upward trajectory into 2025 and 2026. Although other base metals such as zinc exhibit similar upward momentum, UBS emphasizes that copper faces the most pronounced and critical supply deficit. The broader global basic materials sector is expected to benefit directly from this extended commodity bull market.

UBS notes that supply tightness will remain a dominant theme. Primary downside risks include demand falling short of expectations or unexpected early commissioning of new mining capacity.
