UBS provides a comprehensive weekly update on global shipping dynamics, analyzing freight rates, shifting trade flows, and critical geopolitical risks. Container shipping rates remain elevated due to ongoing Red Sea routing diversions, with the Shanghai Containerized Freight Index rising 2.3% week-over-week. However, these gains are being increasingly capped by softening demand, as European imports fell 3% and US imports remained flat.

The dry bulk market faces headwinds, with the Baltic Dry Index dropping 5%, dragged lower by weak capesize vessel rates and an 8% year-over-year decline in China's iron ore imports. Tanker freight continues to struggle under OPEC+ production cuts, evidenced by a 4% weekly drop in Middle East-to-China VLCC rates. Regarding the Strait of Hormuz, while tensions between Iran and Israel are escalating, vessel transit remains unaffected. A potential blockade, however, would severely disrupt 20% of global oil shipments.

Amidst this complex operational backdrop, UBS maintains a constructive view on leading maritime operators. The bank reaffirms a Buy rating on COSCO Shipping Holdings, establishing a target price of 15 Hong Kong dollars per share. This bullish thesis is predicated on the company's ability to sustain high freight rates and execute rigorous cost controls. First-quarter 2026 net profit already surged 15% year-over-year. Should the Red Sea diversions conclude, freight rates could rapidly decline, representing the primary downside risk.
